Welded Plate & Shell Heat Exchangers for CO₂ Refrigeration in Food Processing

Client: Shandong XX Food Co., Ltd

Food processing facilities are increasingly adopting CO₂ refrigeration systems to meet stringent food safety standards, reduce environmental impact, and improve energy efficiency. These systems operate under transcritical conditions and require heat exchangers capable of handling high pressures while delivering stable and hygienic thermal performance.

For this project, welded plate & shell heat exchangers were delivered to Shandong XX Food Co., Ltd for CO₂ refrigeration applications, including gas cooling and heat recovery. The equipment is designed to support reliable operation across a wide range of load conditions typical of food processing lines with variable production demands.
The fully welded plate & shell construction provides a high-integrity, gasket-free pressure boundary suitable for high-pressure CO₂ service. This design minimizes leakage risk, enhances operational safety, and supports long-term reliability under continuous pressure and temperature cycling—key requirements in food-grade refrigeration environments.
Chevron-pattern plate geometry generates strong turbulence on the CO₂ side, enabling efficient gas cooling and stable heat recovery performance. The high heat transfer efficiency allows precise temperature control and rapid thermal response, contributing to consistent product quality and optimized energy utilization.
Compared with conventional shell-and-tube heat exchangers, the welded plate & shell design offers a more compact footprint, higher thermal efficiency, and reduced refrigerant charge. As a result, it provides a reliable, energy-efficient, and space-optimized solution for modern CO₂ refrigeration and heat recovery systems in food processing facilities.
