Welded Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger for Rich Oil Heating

Client: Shanxi Jinhui Coal Coke Chemical Co., Ltd

In coal chemical and coking processes, rich oil heating represents a demanding application characterized by high operating temperatures, elevated pressures, and viscous hydrocarbon media. Stable heat transfer and long-term mechanical reliability are essential to ensure continuous production and downstream process stability.

For this project, a fully welded plate & shell heat exchanger was delivered to Shanxi Jinhui Coal Coke Chemical Co., Ltd for rich-oil heating using saturated steam as the heating medium. The exchanger is designed to operate under continuous high-temperature service, providing efficient and uniform heat input to viscous rich oil streams.

The fully welded plate pack eliminates the use of gaskets, ensuring excellent resistance to thermal aging and pressure cycling commonly encountered in coal chemical plants. This design significantly reduces leakage risks and maintenance requirements compared with gasketed plate heat exchangers, making it well suited for long-term, uninterrupted operation.
The chevron-pattern plate geometry generates high turbulence on both the steam and oil sides, enhancing heat transfer performance even when handling high-viscosity media. Compared with conventional shell-and-tube heaters, the plate & shell configuration achieves higher heat transfer coefficients and faster thermal response, while maintaining a compact footprint.
From an operational perspective, the robust pressure boundary and welded construction allow the exchanger to withstand frequent load fluctuations, start-up and shutdown cycles, and prolonged exposure to high temperatures. As a result, the welded plate & shell heat exchanger provides a reliable, energy-efficient, and lifecycle-optimized solution for rich oil heating in coal chemical and coking applications.
