Welded Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger for NH₃ / CO₂ Cascade Refrigeration

Client: Shandong XX Energy Technology Co., Ltd

NH₃ / CO₂ cascade refrigeration systems are increasingly adopted in industrial and commercial applications due to their high energy efficiency, reduced overall refrigerant charge, and improved environmental performance. The cascade heat exchanger is a critical component, enabling safe and effective heat transfer between the ammonia and CO₂ circuits while maintaining strict separation of the two refrigerants.

For this project, welded plate & shell heat exchangers were delivered to Shandong XX Energy Technology Co., Ltd for use as cascade heat exchangers in NH₃ / CO₂ refrigeration systems. The equipment is designed to support reliable thermal coupling between the high-pressure CO₂ stage and the ammonia stage under continuous operating conditions.
The fully welded plate & shell construction provides a robust, gasket-free pressure boundary, ensuring safe operation when handling high-pressure CO₂ on one side and ammonia on the other. This design minimizes leakage risk and eliminates the potential for cross-contamination between refrigerant circuits—an essential requirement in ammonia-based systems.
Chevron-pattern plate geometry generates strong turbulence on both refrigerant sides, delivering high heat transfer efficiency and stable thermal performance across a wide range of operating loads. This enables precise temperature control at the cascade interface, supporting optimized system efficiency and reliable low-temperature operation.
Compared with conventional shell-and-tube cascade exchangers, the welded plate & shell design offers a more compact footprint, higher heat transfer coefficients, and improved mechanical strength. As a result, it provides a safe, efficient, and integration-friendly solution for modern NH₃ / CO₂ cascade refrigeration systems.
