Plate & Shell Heat Exchangers for Marine & Offshore

Combine heat-transfer selection with seawater compatibility, vapour handling and the installation requirements of the vessel or offshore facility.

Seawater and installation challenges

Seawater chemistry, temperature, contamination and biological deposits affect wetted-material and cleaning decisions. Available space, service clearance and nozzle interfaces can constrain a marine installation. State the actual operating environment rather than treating seawater as a single uniform fluid.

Typical duties

Duties for assessment include seawater cooling and mixed-gas or process-vapour condensation. Condensing service requires both the vapour composition and cooling-water conditions. Identify non-condensable gases, the required condensate condition and the drainage arrangement.

Why consider Plate & Shell

A compact circular welded plate pack can help where installation volume is limited. The surrounding shell permits the flow arrangement and connections to be selected for the duty. Confirm access and cleaning provisions: a removable shell cover does not make every welded passage mechanically accessible.

Material selection

JINCHEN’s existing marine case records all-titanium Plate & Shell construction for seawater and mixed-gas condensation. That project is evidence of a specific material choice, not a universal recommendation for all seawater conditions. Review every wetted component, the fluid chemistry, temperature and cleaning chemicals.

Pressure, drainage and approval scope

Provide normal and transient pressures, cooling-water temperature extremes and allowable pressure drop. Condensate drainage, venting and the installation orientation need review with the system. If classification approval or a particular design code is required, identify it at enquiry so scope and availability can be confirmed; no blanket class approval is asserted.

Published project experience

The published JINCHEN seawater-condenser record identifies the application, customer and all-titanium construction. It does not publish a heat duty, flow rate, pressure or measured energy saving. Use the case as a starting point for a project-specific discussion.
