Plate & Shell Heat Exchangers for Refrigeration

Coordinate condensation, evaporation and cascade duty with refrigerant distribution, oil management and system controls.

Two-phase process challenges

Refrigerant volume and vapour quality change along the flow path. Distribution, liquid level and pressure drop therefore affect both thermal performance and system stability. Review normal operation, turndown, start-up and shutdown, rather than selecting from nominal capacity alone.

Typical duties and fluids

Applications for review include refrigerant condensation, flooded evaporation, direct-expansion evaporation and cascade heat exchange. An ammonia/CO₂ cascade exchanges heat between separate refrigerant circuits, with condensation on one side and evaporation on the other. Water or glycol may form the secondary circuit in other duties.

Why consider a welded plate pack

The compact welded surface and low fluid hold-up can be useful where space and refrigerant inventory matter. The final charge depends on the equipment and system arrangement. A project assessment must confirm heat-transfer area, circuit allocation, materials and pressure containment for the selected refrigerants.

Feed, separation and freezing risk

Flooded service requires review of circulation and liquid level. Direct expansion requires appropriate feed distribution and outlet superheat. Establish the acceptable vapour outlet condition, separation arrangement and oil return. For water or glycol service, evaluate freezing risk at minimum flow and during control changes.

Materials and design conditions

Specify refrigerant purity, oil, moisture and secondary-fluid composition. Review the maximum differential pressure between circuits, including shutdown, and low-temperature material suitability. Pressure and temperature ratings are confirmed for the actual construction; a catalogue family limit is not a system rating.

Application guidance and project evidence

The cascade and evaporation descriptions are engineering application guidance. The current public JINCHEN project record does not provide a named cascade installation or measured refrigeration performance. Such data should be requested for a specific selection rather than inferred from this page.
